Entering Estimates & Quick Set

Setting range estimates in Dual Point Estimation is quick and frictionless. You can edit estimates directly from the issue panel or inline within any of the project workspaces.

Opening the Estimate Editor

  • From the Issue View: In the Issue Panel, click on the estimate value or the estimate chart.
  • From the Global Workspaces Table: In the Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) table, click on any issue's estimate timeline bar.

Input Fields & Syntax

The editor presents two side-by-side text fields:

  • Low Estimate Input: Enter your optimistic duration (e.g. 1d 4h).
  • High Estimate Input: Enter your pessimistic duration (e.g. 3d).

You can use any combination of standard time units: w (weeks), d (days), h (hours), and m (minutes).

Keyboard Shortcuts

  • Enter: Saves the estimate and closes the editor.
  • Escape: Cancels editing and reverts any unsaved changes.
  • Clicking Outside: Automatically cancels and closes the editor.

You can quickly edit both estimates by typing the low estimate, pressing tab, typing the high estimate and then pressing enter to save.

Quick Set Shortcuts

Below the input boxes, the editor provides dedicated Quick Set buttons to accelerate common estimating workflows:

ButtonActionCommon Use Case
Subtask TotalAutomatically sets the parent's Low and High estimates to match the sum of its subtasks.Decomposing an epic or story into subtasks and rolling up the exact totals with one click.
ZeroSets both Low and High estimates to 0.Non-development administrative tasks, operational flags, or cancelled items.
ClearUnsets the estimate entirely (returns issue to unestimated state).Resetting estimates or clearing outdated initial estimates.

Validation Rules

The editor validates inputs automatically before saving:

  • Missing Units: If a number is entered without a recognized unit (e.g. 4), an error message prompts: "Missing time unit. Please use w, d, h, or m."
  • Inverted Range: If the Low estimate exceeds the High estimate (e.g. Low = 5d, High = 2d), saving is blocked with: "Low estimate cannot be greater than High estimate."
  • Empty Inputs: Leaving both fields blank and saving unsets the estimate cleanly.
